Jeff Bezos has made his bet in AI — and it's not language models. Cambridge startup CuspAI, which applies artificial intelligence to design new materials, is in talks to raise $400 million at a valuation of $2.6 billion. The round is led by Bezos Expeditions — Jeff Bezos's investment office.

Bezos's bet on physics

CuspAI was founded in 2024 and is based in Cambridge — in close proximity to Cavendish Laboratory, one of the world's leading physics research laboratories. The team works at the intersection of molecular modeling and large language models adapted for chemistry tasks. According to Financial Times, this is the largest venture investment in the materials AI field — "AI for materials" — in the history of the industry. A $2.6 billion valuation for a two-year-old company signals that investors take materials science AI seriously.

For Bezos, this is a logical continuation of his investment philosophy. How AI designs materials

Traditionally, developing a new material — from battery electrodes to high-temperature superconductors — took years of laboratory experiments using trial and error. Researchers synthesized thousands of compounds, selected promising ones, synthesized again. The process was expensive and slow.

CuspAI inverts this order using generative models:

  • The model generates thousands of candidates — potential molecular structures with desired properties
  • Simulation filters out unpromising options without physical synthesis
  • Remaining candidates undergo computer-based chemical stability checks
  • Only structures with high success probability go to the lab

By researchers' estimates, this approach reduces the path from idea to synthesis by 10–100 times. This is critical for industries where the speed of material development determines competitiveness: battery manufacturing, semiconductors, aerospace alloys.

Market and competitors

Materials AI is a rapidly growing field but still small in volume. CuspAI's competitors include London startup Orbital Materials, Microsoft's research project MatterGen, and several Chinese labs with government funding.

"If you can speed up the discovery of a new material 100 times, you

change the entire industrial landscape," researchers in the field say.

What distinguishes CuspAI is its proximity to Cambridge's academic ecosystem and focus on commercial applications from day one. The company is not trying to solve every task at once: it works with specific industrial partners, determining which material problems to solve first. If the $400 million round closes, the startup will get resources for several years of active research and computational infrastructure scaling.

When one of the world's largest investors directs hundreds of millions of dollars not into generative AI for text but into AI for atomic lattices — this signals a shift in priorities. The next wave of AI investments may be concentrated not in software products but in physical production: new batteries, chips, materials for clean energy.
